Detailed Solution

Untouchability is legally a crime now. Untouchability refers to a social practice that looks down upon specific depressed classes because of their caste and makes any discrimination against them on this ground. The abolition of untouchability is an important step taken by the government of India in response to the injustices done to the marginalised in the presence of a hierarchical social structure. It is now abolished, and its practice in any form is strictly forbidden as per Article 17 of the Indian Constitution. If any person is found to be violating this law and practising untouchability, it shall be considered an offence, punishable under the law.
