Q.

Use the Factor Theorem to determine whether gx is a factor of px in each of the following cases:

(i) px=2x3+x2-2x-1, gx=x+1

(ii) px=x3+3x2+3x+1, gx=x+2

(iii) px=x3-4x2+x+6, gx=x-3

Detailed Solution

(i) Using factor theorem, we get:

For gx=0, the value of x is given by:

x+1=0x=-1

Now,

px=2x3+x2-2x-1p-1=2-13+-12-2-1-1 =-2+1+2-1 =0

Hence, gx is a factor of px

(ii) Using factor theorem, we get:

For gx=0, the value of x is given by:

x+2=0x=-2

Now,

px=x3+3x2+3x+1p-2=-23+3-22+3-2+1 =-8+12-6+1 =-10

Hence, gx is not a factor of px
