Federalism is a political setup that divides power between a central authority and the many constituent areas of a country. In a federation, there are two levels of government. The first is the government for the entire country, which is usually in charge of a few topics of shared national concern. The others are provincial or state governments that handle much of the day-to-day administration of their state. Both levels of government wield power independently of one another. The federal government cannot order the state governments to do anything in a federal system.The state government is independent of the federal government and has its own powers. Both of these governments must answer to the people individually.
