A shock absorber (aka "damper") is a mechanical or hydraulic device designed to absorb and damp shock impulses. When a vehicle moves over an uneven road, it receives jerks and hence the vehicle receives impulsive force. To minimize this impact, shock absorbers are used.

The formula of an impulse is given by:

$I m p u l s e = F (Δ t)$ (where F= force and Δt= small change in time)

$F \propto \frac{1}{Δ t}$

The force of impact and the time duration of impact is inversely proportional to each other. I.e. if one increases, the other decreases, and vice versa.

The shock absorbers increase the time of sudden sharp movement by reducing impulsive force. This minimizes the damage to the vehicle.
