Detailed Solution

Vernacular Press Act was passed in 1878.
In British India, the Vernacular Press Act was forced to suppress the freedom of the Indian press and restrict the expression of criticism of British policies. It was promoted by the Viceroy of India, Lord Lytton. Under this act, many papers were fined, and their editors were fired. The victims could not apply for compensation in a court of law. This act violated the freedom of thought and speech and humiliated the people and culture of India. All the influential leaders in Bengal and India had condemned this as an inappropriate act. Therefore, all Bengal pioneers demanded immediate redress.
