Detailed Solution

Victor Emmanuel II was proclaimed King of United Italy in 1861. Italy was divided into seven states at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The Italian princely house controlled only one state, Sardinia-Piedmont. Several Italian states made a case for the union of Italy. By forming a political alliance with the French, Chief Minister Cavour led Sardinia-Piedmont to victory over the Austrian army in 1859. In order to drive the Spanish occupiers from these regions of Italy, a large contingent of armed volunteers under the command of Garibaldi marched into the Kingdom of Two Sicilies and South Italy in 1860. They had the support of the peasantry. And finally, after the unification of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II became the next monarch of Italy in 1861.
