Victor Emmanuel II was proclaimed the king of united Italy in 1861. Italy was divided into seven states in the early nineteenth century. Only one state, Sardinia-Piedmont, was ruled by the Italian princely house. There was a call for the unification of Italy by various Italian states. In 1859, Sardinia-Piedmont defeated the Austrian armies when Chief Minister Cavour formed a diplomatic alliance with the French. In 1860, a huge group of armed volunteers led by Garibaldi marched into the Kingdom of Two Sicilies and South Italy in order to expel the Spanish rulers from these areas of Italy. They received the peasants' backing. Victor Emmanuel II became the next monarch of Italy in 1861 as a result.
