Detailed Solution

Vijayalaya defeated Pallava kings and captured Kaveri Delta. They were subject to the Pallava kings of Kanchipuram. In the middle of the ninth century, Vijayalaya of the Cholas of Uraiyur captured the delta from the Mutharaiyar. He established Thanjavur and a temple to the goddess Nishumbhasudini there. Vijayalaya's successors conquered neighbouring regions, and the kingdom expanded in size and power. The Pandyan and Pallava territories to the south and north were incorporated into this kingdom. Rajaraja I, the most powerful Chola ruler, became king in 985 and expanded control over most of these areas. He also restructured the empire's administration.
