Detailed Solution

Village headmen gathered the peasants and fought pitched battles with the Lathiyals.
The ryots of Bengal refused to grow indigo and rose in rebellion. There was a reason behind it. Firstly, the system was oppressive to them, and secondly, the ryots thought that the village headmen and the local zamindars were in support of them in the rebellion in 1858. Those village headmen were forced to sign contracts, gather the peasants, and fight pitched battles with the Lathiyals. Some zamindars went around villages and urged ryots to protest against the planters. The zamindars were doing this because they were forced to sign the contract for indigo and to give the land to the planters for the long term.
