Advance system was related to the weavers. Under the new method, weavers had to weave the fabric that had been previously promised to European agents. It was no longer possible for weavers to market their own fabrics or create unique weave patterns. As an alternative, they were forced to reproduce the designs that the company's agents had provided. Gomastha was the term given to an Indian agent of the British East India Company who worked in the Company's colonies and whose responsibility it was to convince local weavers and artisans to sign bonds in order to deliver goods to the Company (also spelled Gumastha or Gumasta; Persian: agent). They struggled to get an adequate supply of good quality raw cotton, which was one of the issues the cotton weavers faced. Britain looked to India for cotton when the American Civil War started and US shipments were halted. Raw cotton's price skyrocketed as India's exports of the material expanded.
