Western disturbances are shallow cyclonic depressions originating over the mediterranean sea.
The mid-latitude regions north of the Tropic of Cancer is the origin of the cyclonic depressions named western disturbances. These cyclones have the name due to their origin from the west. The low pressure prevailing in the Mediterranean sea travels over the countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, and Iran. It enters India heavily moisture-laden. They are blocked by the Himalayan mountains, causing precipitation as snowfall in the Himalayan regions and rainfall in northwest and northern India. The western disturbances also result in rainfall in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, travelling further to the south towards the Equator. The winter months are during which these winds are the strongest. They are generally weak during the monsoon.
