Detailed Solution

Construction activity increased in the cities after the 1840s.
Building activities that increased in the cities also created several job opportunities. Hence new train stations opened up, railroad lines were extended, and roads were widened. River embankments, drainage and sewer lines were installed. As a result, between the 1840s and 1870s, the number of workers employed in the transport sector doubled. Each task required hundreds of labourers for construction, including enlarging roads, digging tunnels, installing drainage and sewers and embanking rivers. Thus in the 1840s, the number of workers employed in the transportation sector doubled.
