Detailed Solution

Collision : The strong interaction among bodies involving exchange of momenta in small interval of time is called collision.
Eg : collision between 2-billiard balls.
There are two types of collisions. They are elastic and inelastic collisions.
Elastic collisions : The collision in which both momentum and kinetic energy are conserved is known as “Elastic collision”.
Eg : Collisions between nuclei and fundamental particles.
Inelastic collisions : The collision in which only momentum is conserved but not kinetic energy is called as “Inelastic collision”.
Eg : Hitting a ball with a bat.
Collision in one dimension (Elastic collision) :
Consider two bodies ‘A’ and ‘B’ of masses ‘m1’ and ‘m2’ respectively and are moving along the same straight line in the same direction.
Let u1, u2 be their velocities before collision (u1 > u2).
After collision their velocities change to v1 and v2 respectively and they move along the same line in the same direction.

Applying law of conservation of linear momentum. Total momentum before collision = total momentum after collision.
m1u1+m2u2=m1v1+m2v2m1u1v1=m2v2u2  ...(1)
Applying law of conservation of kinetic energy
12m1u12+12m2u22=12m1v12+12m2v2212m1u12v12=12m2v22u22     ... (2)
Dividing eqn (2) with eqn (1),
we get
m1u1+v1u1v1m1u1v1=m2v2+u2v2u2m2v2u2u1+v1=v2+u2u1u2=v2v1    ...(3)
The relative velocity of approaching before collision is equal to relative velocity of seperation after collision.
From Eq (3), v2=u1+v1u2 Sub. in eq (1)
m1u1v1=m2u1+v1u2u2m1u1m1v1=m2u1+m2v12m2u2v1=m1m2m1+m2u1+2m2m1+m2u2
From Eq (3) :
v1=v2u1+u2 sub. it in Eq (1) m1u1v2+u1u2=m2v2u2m1u1m1v2+m1u1m1u2=m2v2m2u2m1u1m2u1+2m2u2=m1+m2v12m1u1+m2u2m1u2=m1v2+m2v2v2=2m1m1+m2u1+m2m1m1+m2u2
