Ethers are organic compounds in which an oxygen atom is connected to two alkyl or aryl groups. They have the general formula:

R-O-R'

where R and R' can be either alkyl or aryl groups. Common examples of ethers include diethyl ether (CH3CH2OCH2CH3) and ethylene glycol dimethyl ether (CH3OCH2CH2OCH3).

Structure and Bonding

The oxygen atom in ethers has an sp³ hybridization, similar to alcohols and water. The C–O–C bond angle is approximately 110°, and the C–O bond length is about 140 pm (picometers).

Ethers are widely found in organic chemistry and are especially significant in biochemistry, as similar oxygen linkages occur in carbohydrates and many other biological molecules.

Classification of Ethers

1. Symmetrical Ethers

If the two groups attached to the oxygen are identical, the ether is called symmetrical.

Examples:

  • Diethyl ether: CH3CH2OCH2CH3
  • Dipropyl ether: CH3CH2CH2OCH2CH2CH3

2. Unsymmetrical Ethers

If the two groups attached to the oxygen are different, the ether is called unsymmetrical or mixed ether.

Examples:

  • Ethyl methyl ether: CH3OCH2CH3
  • Methyl phenyl ether: CH3OC6H5
