Plants that grow in water (or) wet places are called hydrophytes. Hydrophytes are classified into 5 categories.

  • Free floating hydrophytes : These are free floating in water and there is no contact with soil. E.g., Pistia, Lemna.
  • Root hydrophytes with floating leaves : Hydrophytes rooted to soil and floating freely in water with long petiolate leaves. E.g., Nelumbo
  • Submerged suspended hydrophytes : These are completely submerged in water, no contact with soil. E.g, Hydrilla
  • Submerged rooted hydrophytes : These are submerged in water and contact with soil by roots. E.g., Vallisneria.
  • Amphibious plants : These are partly in water and partly in air. E.g., Limnophila.
