Some flagella bear lateral hair like fibrils called lateral appendages. Based on lateral appendages the flagella are of 5 types
i. Stichonematic : one row of lateral appendages.
Eg : Euglena
ii. Pantonematic : Two or more rows of lateral appendages. Eg : Peranema
iii. Acronematic : No appendages but the naked terminal filament is present
Eg : Chlamydomonas
iv. Pantacronematic : Two or more rows of lateral appendages and terminal filament also present
Eg : Urceolus
v. Anematic : Both lateral appendages and terminal filament are absent.
Eg : Chilomonas
