Detailed Solution

Microspores are tiny haploid spores in plants that develop into male gametophytes or pollen grains. In the plant kingdom, reproduction happens through spores and gametes. Plants like angiosperms and gymnosperms produce two types of spores: microspores and megaspores. Microspores are the smaller ones that give rise to the male reproductive structures.

Formation of Microspores

  • Microspores are formed inside the anther of a flower through meiosis.
  • The microspore mother cell (diploid) divides meiotically to form four haploid microspores.
  • Each microspore later develops into a pollen grain.

Functions of Microspores

  1. Develop into male gametophytes (pollen grains).
  2. Carry male gametes to the female part of the flower.
  3. Play a crucial role in fertilization.
