What are the basic components of a cyclotron? Mention its uses ?

Cyclotron is a device used to accelerate positively charged particles like protons and deuterons etc. Cyclotron mainly consists of
i) Two hollow D-shaped Metallic chambers D₁ and D₂.
ii) High frequency oscillator
iii) Strong electromagnet
iv) Vacuum chamber

Working: The alternating potential difference source [oscillator] accelerate the particle in the gap between dees D₁ and D₂. The magnetic field makes them move in circular orbits. The frequency of oscillator is made equal to the cyclotron frequency. Then the particle is taken out through the gap with the help of deflector. Kinetic energy of charged particle

1) It is used to implant ions into solids.
2) To produce radio isotopes.
