It has recently been discovered that even atoms are composed of smaller particles known as subatomic particles. Protons, neutrons, and electrons make up the majority of these particles.

The atom's nucleus contains positively charged protons, which are subatomic particles. The nucleus contains neutrons as well, although these are neutral particles. These two subatomic particles give an atom its mass.
The subatomic particles that spin around the nucleus are called electrons, and they are negatively charged. They cannot affect an atom's mass, but they can affect an atom's total charge or ionisation characteristics.
