Detailed Solution

Ozone present in stratosphere protects the organisms from harmful UV radiations. The UV region covers the wavelength range 100-380 nm and is divided into three bands: UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. UV radiation with wavelength shorter than that of UV-B, are almost completely absorbed by earth’s atmosphere, provided that ozone layer is intact. Depletion in the ozone in stratosphere cause the following deleterious effects.

  • UV-B damages DNA and may induce mutation.
  • UV-B causes ageing of skin, damage to skin cells and various types of skin cancer (melanoma).
  • UV-B is absorbed by the cornea of human eye. High dose of UV-B causes inflammation of cornea called snow blindness, formation of cataract (lens become cloudy and cannot see well, obstruct passage of light) etc. such exposure may permanently damage the cornea.
