What are the four types of human resources?

The four common types of HR roles are HR Generalist, HR Specialist, HR Business Partner, and HR Operations.

1) HR Generalist

Handles many HR areas at once, such as hiring, onboarding, employee relations, and compliance. Generalists are common in small to mid-size companies where one person covers multiple tasks.

2) HR Specialist

Focuses on one area deeply. Examples include recruitment, learning and development, compensation and benefits, HR analytics, or DEI. Specialists bring expert knowledge to complex problems.

3) HR Business Partner (HRBP)

Works closely with business leaders to align people plans with business goals. HRBPs advise on org design, change management, talent planning, and performance strategies.

4) HR Operations (Shared Services)

Runs day-to-day HR services at scale. This includes payroll, HRIS data, letters and documents, benefits administration, and employee helpdesk support.
