Detailed Solution

Both cytoplasm and nucleoplasm are essential parts of the cell’s protoplasm, but they perform different functions:

1. Cytoplasm:

  • Acts as a medium where all chemical reactions occur.
  • Holds organelles such as mitochondria, Golgi bodies, endoplasmic reticulum, and ribosomes.
  • Plays a role in metabolism, such as glycolysis and protein synthesis.
  • Helps in transporting materials within the cell through cytoplasmic streaming.
  • Maintains cell shape and consistency.

2. Nucleoplasm:

  • Found inside the nucleus, enclosed by the nuclear membrane.
  • Contains chromatin, which carries genetic information in the form of DNA.
  • Provides a medium for transcription (formation of RNA) and replication (copying of DNA).
  • Supports and protects nuclear structures like the nucleolus.
  • Controls all hereditary and regulatory functions of the cell.
