Detailed Solution

The pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs for oxygenation.

Unlike other arteries, which carry oxygen-rich blood, the pulmonary artery is unique because it carries oxygen-poor blood. It plays a vital role in the pulmonary circulation system, which exchanges gases between the heart and lungs.

Structure

  • Arises from the right ventricle of the heart.
  • Divides into left and right pulmonary arteries — each goes to a lung.
  • Further branches into smaller arterioles and capillaries in the lungs.

Functions

  1. Transport of Deoxygenated Blood: Carries blood low in oxygen and high in carbon dioxide to the lungs.
  2. Gas Exchange: In the lungs, carbon dioxide is released, and oxygen is absorbed into the blood.
  3. Support for Circulation: Helps maintain continuous blood flow between heart and lungs.
