What are the limbs in a human body?

Humans have four limbs: two upper limbs called arms and two lower limbs called legs.

Each limb is made of segments connected by joints. These joints allow your body to move efficiently and perform precise tasks. The upper limbs are specialized for reaching and handling objects. The lower limbs are specialized for support and movement, especially walking and running. Together, the four limbs allow daily activities like writing, cooking, sports, and travel.

Upper limbs (arms)

• Shoulder girdle: The shoulder blade and collarbone connect the arm to the trunk.
• Arm segments: Upper arm (humerus), forearm (radius and ulna), and hand.
• Hand: Wrist, palm, and fingers (thumb plus four fingers) enable grip and fine control.
• Main roles: Reach, lift, carry, throw, type, write, and use tools.

Lower limbs (legs)

• Pelvic girdle: The hip bones connect the legs to the spine and support body weight.
• Leg segments: Thigh (femur), leg (tibia and fibula), and foot.
• Foot: Ankle, heel, arch, and toes provide balance and push-off during walking.
• Main roles: Stand, walk, run, climb stairs, jump, and balance the body.
