Detailed Solution

In his periodic table, Mendeleev organised the elements in a consistent order. Despite being based on atomic number, Mendeleev's periodic table has several aspects that are present in the contemporary periodic table. Remember the holes Mendeleev left because he said a later-discovered element will fill them.

A scientist named Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev proposed a classification of elements based on their atomic mass. He arranged elements in the increasing order of atomic mass in groups (vertical columns) and periods (horizontal rows). He arranged 63 elements that were discovered by that time. The elements showing similar properties were classified into groups. He left some positions for the undiscovered elements in regard to their atomic mass.

Hence, the correct answer is option D.
