Detailed Solution

A parallelogram is a special type of quadrilateral where the opposite sides are parallel. It has the following properties of sides and angles:

  • Opposite sides are equal in length. If one side is 5 cm, the opposite side will also measure 5 cm.
  • Opposite angles of a parallelogram are equal in measure. So, if one angle is 70°, its opposite angle will also be 70°.
  • The consecutive (adjacent) angles are supplementary, i.e., they add up to 180°.
  • Its diagonals bisect each other.
  • Area of a parallelogram is given by Base × Height.

For example, in a rectangle (a type of parallelogram), opposite sides are equal and all angles are right angles. In a rhombus, all sides are equal, but opposite angles are equal in measure.

This property is useful in geometry as well as real life: window frames, bridges, and tiles often use parallelogram properties for stability.

Thus, parallelograms are crucial geometric figures where opposite sides and angles display symmetry and equality.
