Some of the organisms may be closely related, but even a minor genetic change may cause a major morphological difference amongst themselves making them look quite different whereas, many unrelated organisms may be related to each other but may appear very much alike.
It can be understood that the similarity in the characteristics occurs due to constraints in the environmental conditions and not due to any close evolutionary relationship. This is known as either analogy or homoplasy.
