The Harappan cities found in India are Dholavira, Kalibangan, Rakhigarhi, Rupar and Lothal. In the Rann of Kutch, atop Khadir Beyt, where there was water and productive soil, stood the city of Dholavira. Dholavira was divided into three sections, each of which had entrances through gates and was encircled by thick stone walls, as opposed to several other Harappan cities, which were separated into two sections. In Gujarat, near the Gulf of Khambhat, the city of Lothal was situated next to a Sabarmati river tributary. It was close to places where semi-precious stones and other raw materials could be found easily. Kalibangan was situated in Rajasthan and known for its fire altars. Rakhigarhi is situated in the Hisar district of Haryana and is the biggest Harappan site situated in India. Rupra lies on the Sutlej river near Chandigarh and distinctive pottery was discovered from this site.
