The two Tamil ethnic groups living in Sri Lanka are Sri Lankan Tamils and Indian Tamils. Commonly known as Ceylon Tamils, they are descended from those from the former Jaffna Kingdom and the Vannimais, a group of east coast chieftains. They are the descendants of bonded labourers transported from Tamil Nadu to Sri Lanka to work on tea plantations in the nineteenth century. Most Indian Tamils reside in the central highlands, whereas most Sri Lankan Tamils residing in the northern, eastern, and capital cities of Colombo.
