Detailed Solution

The three types of simple permanent tissue in plants are parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma.

Simple permanent tissues are made of one kind of cell and perform basic support, storage, and strength functions. They arise from meristems and then lose the ability to divide.

Types and features

  • Parenchyma: Living cells with thin primary walls and large vacuoles. Functions include storage of food and water, photosynthesis (in chlorenchyma with chloroplasts), and healing. Found in cortex, pith, mesophyll, and fruit flesh. Air-filled aerenchyma helps aquatic plants float.
  • Collenchyma: Living elongated cells with unevenly thickened primary walls, especially at corners. Provides flexible support in young stems and petioles without restricting growth. Often found beneath the epidermis.
  • Sclerenchyma: Dead at maturity with thick, lignified secondary walls. Gives high tensile strength and rigidity. Includes fibres (elongated, e.g., jute) and sclereids (stone cells in pear grit, seed coats).
