What are the three types of software?

The three main types of software are system software, application software, and programming software. System software manages and controls computer hardware. It includes operating systems like Windows or macOS, device drivers, and utility programs that enable hardware to communicate with other software. It forms the foundation that lets computers function. 

Application software consists of programs designed for end users to perform specific tasks—examples include word processors, spreadsheets, browsers, and photo editors. These help users interact with the computer to create, process, and store information. Programming software (also known as development tools) assists developers in creating other software. 

This category includes compilers, interpreters, text editors, and debuggers used for coding and testing applications. Together, these three types make up the complete software ecosystem: system software runs the hardware, programming software builds new tools, and application software allows everyday users to perform meaningful work. Without any one of these layers, computers would either be useless hardware or inaccessible to human interaction.
