Detailed Solution

Uses of turgidity in plants

  1. Structural support- Turgid cells press on the cell wall (turgor pressure). This stiffens tissues so leaves and young stems stay upright.
  2. Cell growth and expansion- Water entry raises turgor. Walls loosen, cells expand, organs enlarge. Primary driver of leaf and root growth.
  3. Stomatal control- Guard cells gain turgor to open stomata and lose turgor to close them. Regulates CO₂ uptake, transpiration, and leaf temperature.
  4. Phloem transport (pressure-flow)- High turgor at sugar sources and lower turgor at sinks push phloem sap from leaves to growing/Storage tissues.
  5. Leaf and flower movements- Turgor shifts in pulvini power nyctinasty and heliotropism (sleep movements, sun tracking), and help open/close flowers.
  6. Root penetration and soil exploration- Turgor-driven expansion lets root tips push between soil particles and elongate into new zones for water and minerals.
  7. Mechanical buffering- Turgid parenchyma cushions tissues, reducing collapse under transient water stress or mechanical load.
  8. Hydraulic signaling and drought response- Falling turgor triggers wilting, a rapid signal to reduce leaf area, close stomata, and limit water loss.
  9. Fruit and tissue firmness- Turgor maintains crispness in leaves and fruits. Loss of turgor causes limp leaves and soft produce.
  10. Guttation and exudation- Positive root pressure (a form of turgor) can drive guttation through hydathodes when transpiration is low.
