Detailed Solution

The Revolt of 1857  brought about a change in British attitude towards censorship in India.
The perception of press freedom by the British shifted with the Revolt of 1857. Before 1798, censorship was not a significant priority for the East India Company's colonial state. However, angry Englishmen urged that the native press be suppressed in 1857. As a result, the colonial authorities started considering strict control measures as local newspapers began to take a strong nationalist stance. In addition, the Vernacular Press Act of 1878 gave the government broad power to restrict articles and commentaries published in the local press.
