When sunlight strikes the sea or ocean's surface, some of it is reflected back, but most of the longer wavelengths, such as red, orange, and yellow, penetrate the water molecules and are absorbed.

As a result, only shorter wavelengths of light with violet and blue colors are reflected back to our eyes. Therefore, the seawater appears blue.
