Mandapika and Hatta consist of the broad layout of the small towns that emerged from the eighth century onwards. From the eighth century onwards, several small towns emerged from large villages within the Indian subcontinent. These towns consisted of Mandapika (or mandi or marketplace), to which nearby villagers brought their produce to sell. Hatta (or haat) were market streets lined with shops. The market streets had various artisans selling their items, such as potters, oil pressers, sugar makers, toddy makers, smiths, stone masons, etc.
