The use of iron contributed most to development during India's second Urbanisation.
In 600 BCE, the second Urbanisation began. New people arrived, and new communities popped up close to and in the middle of the Ganges plains. Iron tool use was the primary characteristic of the second Urbanisation. With an iron axe and iron ploughs, enormous areas of forestland were cleared, creating an agricultural surplus. The second Urbanisation and settlements in the Gangetic plains, particularly in the central Gangetic plains, also marked the commencement of city life.
