Detailed Solution

The phrase "Hindustan" in the thirteenth century meant the areas of Punjab, Haryana, and the landscapes between the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. The phrase was used politically to refer to areas that were a part of the Delhi Sultan's holdings. Although the lands associated with this name moved to the extent of the Sultanate, south India was never included in this term. Babur used Hindustan to illustrate the flora, animals, and way of life of the inhabitants of the subcontinent around the middle of the sixteenth century. The term "Hindustan" did not have the political and social connotations that we associate with it today, even though the possibility of a geographical and sociological entity like "India" existed. Today, we understand the term "Hindustan" to refer to "India," the developed nation-state.
