Detailed Solution

The device that converts Alternating Current (AC) into Direct Current (DC) is called a Rectifier. AC current changes direction periodically, while DC flows only in one direction. Many electronic devices—like chargers, radios, and computers—require DC power to operate. The rectifier makes this possible by using components such as diodes, which allow electric current to pass in only one direction.

There are two main types of rectifiers:

  1. Half-wave rectifier – converts only one half of the AC waveform into DC.
  2. Full-wave rectifier – converts both halves of the waveform, producing smoother DC output.

Modern rectifiers often use bridge circuits made of four diodes for efficient conversion. The output DC may still have small ripples, so it is passed through filters and voltage regulators to make it steady.
