Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain started a school for girls.
Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain came from a well-to-do family. She was prevented from studying Bangla and English because, back then, English was perceived as a language that would introduce girls to novel concepts that were deemed inappropriate for them. But with the help of her older brother and sister, Rokeya was able to learn to read and write both Bangla and English. She later started writing too. Hossain also founded a girls' school in Kolkata in 1910. The institution is still in operation today.
