Ryots were hesitant to cultivate Indigo.
Indigo cultivation in Bengal increased by the end of the eighteenth century. India exports about 30% of the Indigo to Britain, quickly increasing to 95%. Over the years, some firm executives quit their employment and entered the indigo industry. The NIJ and RYOTI agricultural methods in India were the two most common types. Peasants grow Indigo under the NIJ system either on fields they own or by renting it from zamindars. In the RYOTI system, the ryots were compelled to cultivate Indigo and sign a contract or agreement with the planters. Under this strategy, the business offers ryots loans, seeds, and equipment to help them cultivate Indigo. A new loan would only be given when the borrower grew Indigo and gave it to the authorities. The ryots quickly became aware of the lending system's catch-22, and the amount paid was reduced. There were other issues, like the soil where Indigo was grown could no longer support any other crops. The result is that ryots are dependent on a single crop. Numerous ryots opposed this repressive system in 1859 by refusing to use Indigo. There were hartals, indigo factory assaults, and boycotts of planters. They rebelled against this system with the aid of local zamindars, and ultimately the system was overthrown in Bengal.
