The police resorted to brutal repression and martial law during the agitation in Bolivia in February 2000. A successful four-day general strike was organised in Cochabamba city in January 2000 by a coalition of labour, human rights, and community groups to protest against the water price hike by a multinational corporation(MNC). The strike ended once the administration agreed to talk. But nothing took place. When the unrest resumed in February, the police turned to violent repression. In April, there was yet another strike, and martial law was declared. However, the people's might compelled the MNC officials to leave the city and forced the government to accede to all demonstrators' demands.
