Socialist revolutionaries believed in a social revolution.
A political ideology, doctrine, and tradition within socialism known as revolutionary socialism emphasises the belief that a social revolution is required to bring about structural changes to society. One of the leading groups in the Russian socialist movement were the Bolsheviks, Socialist Revolutionaries and the Mensheviks. The divisions were created in 1903 due to a disagreement between Julius Martov and Vladimir Lenin within the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. The Bolsheviks represented most socialists who wanted revolution. However, in contrast to the Mensheviks, who saw the need for cooperation with the bourgeoisie (capitalists and industrialists), Bolsheviks maintained that it required only a revolution led and managed by the proletariat.
