Detailed Solution

Union Carbide’s Bhopal plant produced pesticides.
Union Carbide was a United States company that established its pesticide plant in Bhopal. It established its plant in India for its cheap labour, lower safety, and enforcement measures. The lack of safety measures on the part of the company and the lack of enforcement measures by the government led to the Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984. The plant started leaking poisonous gases as the safety devices were malfunctioning or in short supply. The leak affected not just the workers but everyone living around the plant. It contaminated the soil, water, and air of Bhopal, which still remains contaminated.
