The process of the addition of oxygen to a substance in a chemical reaction is called oxidation. This is done with the help of an oxidizing agent which actually facilitates oxygen.

Examples of oxidizing agents are KMnO4, K2Cr2O7, etc. When an oxidizing agent adds oxygen to the alcohol compound, the alcohol gets converted into carboxylic acids. The reaction occurs in the following way:
RCH2OH + KMnO4  RCOOH, where R - can be any alkyl group.
