Detailed Solution

A village or a group of villages is meant by Mahal in British revenue records. The Mahalwari system was a British method of collecting land revenue. Under this system, the village headmen collected land revenue from the farmers on behalf of the entire community. Lord William Bentinck instituted the Mahalwari system in India between 1828 and 1835. Thus, the whole village was renamed 'Mahal' and treated as a single entity to collect the land revenue.
