Plasma and Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) are the fourth and fifth states of matter, respectively.

Plasma (4th state)

Plasma is a hot, ionized gas containing free electrons and positive ions in roughly equal numbers. Because its particles are charged, plasma responds strongly to electric and magnetic fields, giving it properties very different from neutral gases. Though less common at Earth’s surface, plasma is widespread in the universe—stars, the Sun’s corona, lightning, neon signs, and auroras are all plasmas.

Bose–Einstein Condensate (5th state)

A BEC forms when a dilute gas of certain atoms (e.g., rubidium, sodium; helium shows related superfluid behavior) is cooled to near absolute zero (close to 0 K). At these ultralow temperatures, atoms lose almost all thermal motion and their de Broglie waves overlap, so many occupy the same lowest energy state. The collection then behaves like a single quantum entity with striking effects (e.g., superfluidity, coherence).

In short:

• Plasma = hot, ionized, electromagnetically active gas (ubiquitous in the cosmos).
• BEC = ultra-cold, quantum-coherent state where atoms act as one.
