The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is an autonomous body of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India. It was initially set up in 1931 under the Industrial Resolution Commissioner's Office (IRCO) Act, 1917. In 1963 BIS was formally constituted as a statutory organisation and since then it has been functioning as the National Standards Body of India. Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) publishes a variety of standards, which are recognized and adhered to by both domestic and international industries. BIS is India's national standards body, with over 70 years of excellence in standardisation and conformance management.
