Food Security means availability, affordability, and accessibility of food for all at all times. In rural areas, vulnerable groups like agricultural labourers, casual workers, and traditional artisans are food insecure. Whereas construction workers, ill-paid workers, and casual labourers are vulnerable in urban areas. Such poor people have ensured food security through the public distribution system, a network of fair price shops or ration shops providing stipulated amounts of food grains at a price lower than the market price. The buffer stock procured by FCI is stored in granaries and supplied to the ration shops. The government pays an MSP to the farmers before the onset of the sowing season every year to increase the production of grains like rice and wheat and maintain a buffer stock of these grains.
