Detailed Solution

La patrie means the fatherland. The French Revolution used various symbols and allegories of the nation. From the beginning, the French revolutionaries employed different tactics and practices to foster a sense of group identity among the French people. The two concepts of "la patrie" (fatherland) and "le citoyen (citizen)" were used popularly. They both emphasised the idea of a unified society with equal rights under the law. They were used together to symbolise that the country's residents were all sons of the same father and that they were all one big family. Furthermore, to distance itself from the older despotic version of France, the older royal standard was replaced by a new French flag, the tricolour.
