What does precipitation mean in weather?

In weather, precipitation means any form of water, liquid or solid, that falls from the atmosphere to the Earth’s surface, such as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. Weather scientists (meteorologists) use the term precipitation to describe the total amount of moisture that falls in a given place over a certain time. 

Precipitation is a key element of weather reports, since it tells us if the day will be dry, rainy, or snowy. It is measured using a rain gauge in millimeters (mm). Forecasting precipitation helps people prepare for floods, droughts, or storms.
